What Is ToeFX Light Therapy?
ToeFX is an FDA-cleared, LED-based light therapy system designed specifically to treat toenail fungus. It uses photodynamic therapy—a process that targets fungal cells directly beneath the nail—to disrupt their ability to survive and multiply. Over time, as the fungus is eliminated, healthy nail tissue grows back.
Here's how a typical treatment session works at our Missoula podiatry office:
- Nail preparation. Your clinician will debride (file down) the affected nails before treatment. This allows light to penetrate the nail and reach the fungus beneath it.
- Serum application. A photoactive blue serum called FungalBlue is applied to the nails. This formula binds to fungal cells and makes them vulnerable to the light.
- Light treatment. The ToeFX Therapy Light is placed over your toes for approximately 10 minutes. The session is completely painless.
Most patients require ToeFx treatments every two weeks for about six months, typically totaling eight to 12 sessions. After the active treatment phase, we typically recommend maintenance sessions every six to eight weeks to prevent recurrence. The blue serum color will fade naturally within seven to 10 days after each treatment.
How ToeFX Compares to Other Toenail Fungus Treatments
If you've looked into toenail fungus treatment options before, you've probably encountered a few: topicals, terbinafine, and laser therapy. Here's how they stack up against ToeFX.
- Topicals. Topical solutions like efinaconazole (Jublia) must be applied daily for nearly a year and have an efficacy rate of only 15 to 18 percent.
- Terbinafine. Oral terbinafine works better—roughly 40 percent of patients see clearance—but it requires blood monitoring and carries a risk of liver toxicity and GI side effects.
- Laser therapy. Laser treatments are another non-surgical option that many patients appreciate because they are drug-free and performed in-office. Results can vary depending on the severity of the infection, the type of laser used, and individual nail growth patterns.
ToeFX, by contrast, delivers a 73 percent improvement rate (defined as more than 3mm of clear nail growth or complete clearance), with no side effects, no daily medication, and no discomfort. Sessions are clinic-based, so there's nothing to remember to apply at home. You simply come to the office, get treated, and go on with your day.
Who Is a Good Candidate for ToeFX?
ToeFX is a well-suited option for a wide range of patients. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have stubborn toenail fungus that has not responded to creams, sprays, or other topical treatments.
- Want to avoid oral antifungal medications due to concerns about side effects, liver health, or drug interactions.
- Have diabetes or circulatory issues that make untreated fungal nails a higher-risk concern.
- Prefer a drug-free option that fits into a regular schedule and requires no daily at-home maintenance.
- Want to feel confident about your feet again, whether that means wearing sandals, going barefoot at the pool, or simply not feeling self-conscious at your next appointment.
One of our skilled podiatrists will evaluate your nails and medical history during your initial consultation to determine whether ToeFX is right for your situation.
What to Expect During Your ToeFX Treatment Journey
Toenail fungus doesn't clear up overnight, and that's true of any legitimate treatment. Because toenails grow slowly (averaging about 0.5mm per month), it takes time for healthy nail tissue to replace infected growth. Most patients begin to see visible improvement as the new nail grows in over the course of treatment.
Consistency matters. Missing sessions can allow the fungus to reestablish itself, which is why staying on schedule is important. Between visits, your care team will advise you on lifestyle habits that support treatment—things like washing linens at high temperatures, disinfecting shoes, and keeping nail clippers clean and separate from others in your household.
Once your nails are clear of fungus, maintenance visits every six to eight weeks can help you maintain long-term results.
Toenail fungus is one of those conditions that's easy to put off treating. Unfortunately, the longer it goes unaddressed, the harder it becomes to clear. At Alpine Foot & Ankle Clinic, our experienced podiatrists are committed to advanced, evidence-based care for toenail fungus. For patients in Missoula and throughout Montana and northern Idaho who have struggled with this condition, ToeFX light therapy represents a meaningful step forward.
