painful ingrown or thickened toenailsI have many patients who tell me for years they have ‘dug out’ their ingrown toenails, what I call ‘bathroom surgery.’  They have put off coming to the doctor out of fear or other factors.  Because of this, I know there are many more people out there still living with these symptoms.  I am here to tell you: you don’t have to live with the pain!

Why do ingrown toenails occur?

There are many causes, including genetics, trauma, thickness of the toenail, or toe deformities.

What happens if ingrown toenails are left untreated or are treated with ‘bathroom surgery?’

Infection may result, and in some cases this might be serious.  With most people an infection may be treated, but serious problems could occur in patients with diabetes or poor circulation.  The definitive treatment for recurring ingrown toenails is not antibiotics-it is removal of the ingrown toenail.

What can be done about ingrown or thickened toenails?

These problems can simply be remedied here in the clinic.  Local anesthesia is administered to the toe (cold spray is used to make this process easier and less painful) and the procedure is done with the toe completely ‘asleep.’  There are often questions about whether the entire nail has to be removed: this is only necessary if the nail itself is overly thick.  Preferably only the borders that are ingrown are removed-this allows for quicker healing and a more natural appearing nail.  Entire nails or affected borders may also be permanently eliminated, instead of having the nail grow back again and again.

Ingrown or painful, thickened toenails are a nuisance, but one you don’t have to live with.  At Alpine Foot & Ankle Clinic, we strive to make this procedure as painless as possible.  If you or a loved one have been suffering with a toenail problem, give us a call at 406-721-4007 today.
