Sunscreen is always encouraged, especially during these hot, summer days. It protects us from the harmful effects of the powerful UV rays. However, how many times to people remember to put sunscreen on their feet? We have heard that UV rays are very dangerous, but why exactly are they dangerous? The UV rays actually damage the cells in our skin and are known to cause skin cancer as well as other disorders. Sunscreen is used to block and reduce absorption of these powerful rays and hopefully avoid skin cancer. Skin cancer can occur anywhere on our body, including our feet: it is important to ensure we are protecting all parts of our body.

How can you tell you may have skin cancer? What are some warning signs? These are questions many of us may ask. Although there are many different types of skin cancer, most cancers will stem from a mole that already exists or a new mole that appears. Melanoma is one of the worst skin cancers and can basically occur anywhere on the body. One way you can tell if you should see your doctor is by utilizing the ABCDE guidelines:
A- Asymmetrical: If a mole is asymmetrical it may be an indicator to get the mole checked out by a doctor.
B- Border: If the border is irregular, you may want to see a doctor
C- Color: The color within a mole should be even and either a brown or tan color. Cancerous moles tend to be blue or black, but can be brown or tan. Also the color will appear uneven and irregular.
D- Diameter: The diameter should be less than the size of a pencil eraser. If it is larger than that, you should consult your doctor.
E- Evolution: If the mole has change in color, size, or shape recently, you should see your doctor.
If you notice any of these warning signs, you should see your doctor right away. Remember, some skin cancers are more dangerous than others so never hesitate to consult your doctor. Treatment often includes removing the pre-cancerous or cancerous mole or affected area of skin. In the foot, melanoma may occur under a toenail or on the sole of the foot-don’t forget to check those areas.
Knowing your ABCDE’s of skin changes can save your life. Ensure you always are checking your moles for changes and checking to see if there are any new moles. To protect your skin, including the skin on your feet, always wear sunscreen.
